OK - this one's fun. It falls into the category of, "Things I Like From England."
There are a few different parts here so follow me closely. Since they aren't really related to each other in any way other than the fact that I happen to like them all, it could get a bit confusing.
1. A box of Maldon Salt. This is one of my very favorite English ingredients. I've gotten badly addicted as a matter of fact. It's really just the best salt in the world and that's all there is to it. In England I keep a dish of it right next to the stove and it's all I use when I cook. But in the States it's a bit harder to come by, more expensive, and generally more of a luxury - so I hoard it, and add it only when I want a gorgeous salty crunch on the top of my veggies (or what have you.)
But not only is it the best salt in the world, it also has the best story of any salt in the world. It comes from Maldon - site of the legendary Viking / Saxon battle. How many salts can that be said of?! And I happen to know all about the legendary Viking / Saxon battle of Maldon . . . because my Oxford-stud husband is an Anglo Saxon groupie. Not only does he know the language, he's currently writing a book (a bit frantically because it's due in December) about the great Saxon King Alfred. What this means is that I know all about people named things like Guthrum and Ragnar Lothbrok (which translates, I believe, to Ragnar Hairy-Britches.) And when we take the kids to the British Museum in London we make a beeline to the Sutton Hoo display. And when the statue of Alfred the Great in the market square in Wantage had it's arm with the battle axe broken off, we noticed. We noticed because we drive by a lot. But I digress. The point is, you could be the proud owner of a box of Maldon salt . . . and feel just a little wild when you top your pasta with salt that hails from a place where Vikings and Saxons duked it out over 1,000 years ago.
2. And because you need a dish to put your salt in . . .
Here's a fun little antique silver urn that I picked up in England. It's Sheffield silver, and I love the lion heads on the sides. It's quite small . . . small enough to be a dish of salt, or a bud vase, or a candle holder, or to keep your toothpicks in. All in all a festive little unit that I like a lot.
3. And because no purse would be complete without it . . .
A Skirty! In the winner's choice of size.
Now - a word about entering. Leave a comment on this post and you'll be entered. Link to this post, and you'll be entered twice! But here's the hitch. Not all the links necessarily show up for me to see easily . . . so if you link to it, make a note of that in the comment you leave. A few people wondered if they have to write a post or add this site to their blog roll. Either one will work - but if you already added this to the blog roll last time, then link from a post!
So there you go! Another fortnight!

I had never heard of that type of salt, but I am a big fan of the King Alfred era of English history, hairy britches and all. The little silver urn would fit right in at our house, and my nearly three year old daughter would love a skirty. :)
I didn't realize salt could taste differently - but I'm intrigued! And I have 5 daughters - that I would love to have skirtys (or should I say "skirties"?) for!!
Do I have to write something interesting? 'Cuz I was up way too late and I'm not awake yet this morning. So here's my entry and here's my link.
Oh, I'd love a skirty for my four-year-old, so please put me in for the draw...except I'm from the UK, so if the P&P is a bit expensive, please don't worry about putting my name in.
PS. If I do win, please keep the precious Malden salt!
Oh what a fun purse!
sounds good, count me in!
What a fun giveaway! I'd love to try that salt.
OOOhhhh, I love ALL THREE!!!
I love it all. And I'm curious about the salt. Will I, a humble foodie wannabe, know the difference between nifty salt and plain old girl-with-the-umbrella? (I'm pretty sure the only reason I have kosher salt sitting around is that a turkey I made last year called for it...and it looks fun because the crystals are so big and fat.)
Oh Yeah!~~Love the short history lesson on the salt!
Count me in - I really want a skirty for my daughter, too! :)
All the English treats look great, but the skirty would be the real prize! Count me in. :)
Looks like fun stuff! :)
Enter me please. I would love to give a history lesson every time I pass the salt.
Here's my official entry. Thanks!
Great give a way! I will link to your post on my blog.
This is just too much fun!
What a great purse! Please enter me...being a bit of an Anglophile, I'd love to win (especially the beautiful urn!). I've linked to your blog on mine: http://prairiegirls.blogspot.com/
Kara A.
Oh goodness! I can NEVER resist anything English. Pick me, pick me, pick me.
Hooray! Another way to indulge myself in my love of handbags and things intriguing.
What fun, and how generous of you! Please count me in.
Love that salt! Thanks for entering me.
I have to have my imported loose tea, but I never realized that one could have a salt preference!
My little girl definitely needs a skirty! When are you going to start offering them for women?
I'm in again!
That's a great filler list! Count me in! :)
Hi, I would like to be entered. I also posted a link to here on my blog. Thanks! :)
That little urn is so cute! You have picked a fun giveaway. I'd love to be included. I'll add you to my blog roll too.
Julie Jones
Okay, it's definitely time to get in on this fun. But here's a question: if I link you in a post AND add you to our blogroll, then do I get three chances? Hmmm?
Keep it up, Bekah, especially that fashion advice. That's good stuff, that is!
Claire
Just by way of being very accessible and easy to follow: I did, in fact, link to you.
Ooo, fancy historical salt, a lovely dish for the salt AND a skirty?!? I'm in. :)
Oh, this is a really good one! LOVE the darling salt cellar.
My girls are 2 and 3 so winner or not skirties need to be a part of our fall wardrobe.
Pick me, pick me! I looooove Sea salt. Alas...I have no daughters, but I have neices and two Goddaughters!
My grand-daughter Klara loves her skirty. I would love to win for grand-daughter #2, Audrey Megan! BTW, where are your skirties made?
Enter me! I love salt. And I linked to you on my blog. Here.
-Rita
Sounds like a wonderful purse!
mccammacks(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
I'd love to win <3 So consider this my entry comment, and I also linked to you for a second entry right here!!!
m
Love the English/British give away! One day I'm going to go visit there as I've always wanted to do so, but I have to get over my fear of flying phobia~LOL!
I came here from Valerie's blog Bound for Grace. Would that qualify her for another entry?? :-)
I'd love to win but it's been a joy to come and visit your blog regardless.
Jeni
It's not too late to enter, I hope! Count me in! I'll go put a post on my blog right now so this can be a double entry!
I would love a skirty for my little girl! And I will link to your giveaway on my blog! Thanks!
Bekah...you are a hoot! Thanks for all the fun posts. Martha Stewart did a wonderful series on salts..in all my years I never knew that there are so many varieties. Count me in on the contest! XXXOOO
Fun!
Yep, I'd like to enter to win! WOW- so many things in one drawing. Oh, pick me! :)
Fancy salt and a skirty? I'm so there! And how cool is that salt cellar!? I will definitely link to you.
Yay! Looks fun. Enter me!(Twice, I posted it as well.)
We would love a quality salt, and that dish is gorgeous! Of course, what I really want is a skirty for my sword-fighting, tea-sharing, pet-bossing 3yo daughter. And I am adding a link to my blog- younghappenings.blogspot.com
Fun lesson in salt. Thanks.
Andrea
Oooh I'm a sucker for exotic cooking ingredients and my daughter could sure use the skirty!
I love sea salt and would be curious to see what makes this salt extra special. :)
Count me in please.
This is such a great giveaway! What beautiful and generous gifts! Thanks so much for the opportunity. :)
Oh, what fun! All things sound exciting.
I love sea salt! And Sutton Hoo!
Wow, great giveaway! Guess I need to go write a post now!
Okay, so instead of a post, I made it a delicious link. My most current links are up high on my sidebar and I don't add links every day, so it will stay at the top for several days.
Does that count?
I've never entered a contest for such lovely things. The winner be blessed!
We're dedicated fans of skirtys, love odd salts and the little urn reminds me of a very old flowerpot I had (with lion heads on the sides) that I broke. Sigh. It would ease my loss. :)
Bekah,
Please add the Stokes to your drawing.
Blessings,
Christine
I'd like to be entered too. I've linked to your blog here at my own blog.

I already left a comment above to enter the contest, but I also linked your post (and blog) on my blog today. Here is the link:

Thanks!
Count me in! I am a salt snob, and urn-less with two little girls who could use a skirty (or seven, since they were dresses and skirts exclusively.)
Absolutely count me in! That bowl is to die for and I'm interested in trying the salt, especially with the sweet history behind it.
How fun!! I would love to try the salt!
Count me in... you've piqued my curiosity about the salt...we've been reading lately about the Saxons in schoolso this would make a great addition to our hands on approach to school:) I've also posted about it on my blog. www.homeschoolblogger.com/homeskoolmom
Thanks!
Hmm...I wonder if your salt would do the same tricks as my coarse kosher salt?
Here is a link to your link on my page!
Karla
OOppps...forgot the link!

Hi, I just love the silver urn, and the history behind the salt, count me in!
What a fun giveaway! I've just been hearing about the Viking/Saxon conflict in one of my university classes (a class about the English language).
I love maldon salt! what a great giveaway!
Mmm...salt (and other goodies). I have a feeling that if my husband gets a taste of that salt he'll want to increase my food budget so I can buy it regularly. :)
Oh, please add me! I'm in love with that little urn... And my little girl can really use a skirty, now that summer is about to make an appearance here in the southern hemisphere. The salt would be an added bonus. I'm not in the States, so on the odd chance I get chosen and the postage is ridiculous, just choose someone else.
I would love to try the salt, keep the urn and purse. I would use the skirty for my granddaughters--of course that would mean I need two skirties or skirtys!
Judy J
Fun stuff!
Amy
Yay for yummy salts! Please enter me.
I've not heard of Maldon Salt until today. May I say that our family loves Salt, so much in fact that it's the name of our Little White Westie. We've come up with many songs to the word, "Salt."
The salt sounds delicious, the urn reminds me fondly of Narnia, and the skirty would be perfect for either of my nieces. Count me in! (Please and Thank You)
This is a great purse. I would love to try the salt and the urn is so great. Also, I have been wanting to try the skirty out for under our school uniforms. This is really fun!
At this point I'd take anything from England, eveen salt! I don't know if I'll ever make it there in person, but I love all things English. The skirty I would give to my 4yr old niece. She's very "active" (read WILD) :)
Count me in! You and your family are some of the funniest people I have ever read. I love reading your stuff.
We switched to Sea Salt about a year ago but somehow a salt named Malden sound so much grander than Trader Joes in a self grinder on the stove top.
I'm sure that salt is better than what we've got in Mexico.
The Sutton Hoo relics were my third favorite in the British Museum after the fabulous chessmen and the wildly carved Assyrian walls.
I love different salts! Count me in, please.
What a great idea for marketing your skirties! I will post also on my blog: http://jpm14.wordpress.com
The lion urn and salt look amazing along with the skirty!
Ruth
Okay, I'm in again! This time I've also added a link.
Oh, I'd love the salt urn, my husband would love the salt, and our four year old would adore a skirty!
I love the little silver urn! It's wonderful!
Obviously, I love the Skirty, but I've never used Malden salt so that would be very nice indeed. And the lovely loving cup for salt... so sweet.
It's been too long since I had the pleasure of Maldon salt. Plus a skirty - my daughter won't know what hit her veggies or her legs!
Would love to have a skirty for my almost five year old daughter. I have been thinking about making her some bloomers, but alas, the task is never accomplished. Here's the link: http://rebekahmerkle.blogspot.com/2008/09/and-another-one.html.
Blessings, Lisa
count me in....thanks!
I'm in!
My 5-yr-old grand-daughter would love a skirty. So cute! Hubby/cook would enjoy the salt. And I would love the urn. Such a fun purse you've put together.
Sounds nice!
We love sea salt around here! And as a dresses/skirts only family, the skirty would get much use by my 5 yr old twin girls.
My niece is currently studying in London. Sounds like I need to ask her to bring me some Maldon Salt when she returns. But if I won this purse ... ;)
Oh...what a great story! We love the King Alfred story after being introduced to him in our Phonics Museum!
I also adore sea salt!
What an awesome purse!
I have never tried this kind of salt, but I am 5 months pregnant and enjoying my veggies with a bit of salt. My 2 year old daughter would love that little skirty.
I'm in!
Skirty would be perfect for my girls whom only wear dresses, the salt sounds really cool. I have some sea salt I just love, definitly taste different from table salt
"Hwelc mann maeg swetmetta brucan bucan sealtes swaecce?" --from Aelfric's Colloquy on the Occupations.
In other words, I'd love some Anglo-Saxon salt! And I've linked you to my blog.
Thanks for the history on the tasty salt. Hooray, another purse giveaway!
oh, I'm up for winning anything!
But I especially like those bloomers/skirties. They'd be great to wear under a dress for PE.
Wonderful site!
Debbie
Hi Bekah!
This is becoming too much fun to pass up. Count me in. And I have to say that Greta has a become a faithful wearer of the skirty, and the relief it brings me, to see her playing in her favorite dress all over the playground, is priceless.:)
Thanks!
If this were a contest of skill, Elizabeth should win for that bit of Old English.
I would love some delicious sea salt-it sounds delicious, and the tiny urn is just too cute! I am also going to add you to our links on our blog, and I hope we can send some more people your way.
Oh good heavens A fellow salt lover. People look at me as though I am crazy when I talk about the wonders of salt but I really couldn't live with it and I'd love to try this one. And the skirty is a ta die for! I'd like the little silver urn too please.

Salt it always useful especially when you describe it the way you do and girls can always do with another skirty. I have you on my blogroll too by the way, waiting for all the pretty dresses.
Would love to win the prize :) I'm not sure if this one has expired or not, so I'm entering anyway. Did you include an expiration date in your entry and I just didn't see it? Thanks!

Skirty! YEAH!!
I love and need this purse!!! The history of the salt is making me feel I need to try it sooner rather than later! The container is very fun, and my girl needs another skirty!
Enter me for the purse too!
I see that sizes for skirties seem to start at about age 2-ish. I'm eagerly waiting to see my daughter in one, but she's only 15 months right now, so it'll be forever before they fit on her!
Love salt, love skirties--count me in! Margie
Mmmm! Three irresistible prizes, please count me in!
So...I'm going to try and attach my link this time, though I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. Well, here goes!
