Silly, I know.

Occasionally I do embarrassing things. My projects frequently take me by surprise, really they do. One moment I'm planning on getting caught up on the laundry, and suddenly I find myself painting a trash can instead.

But let me explain. There are reasons actually. It hit me like a thunderbolt today . . . why the heck do I have a miniature garbage can in my kitchen? Seriously. I have five children after all. We can and do generate a lot of trash. My poor long-suffering son takes it out every ten minutes throughout all his waking hours. And even then I usually have a horrible, despicable, abominable mess of a garbage can with 6 cereal boxes ballooning out the top, and then someone decides to scrape the spaghetti on top rather than inserting a new bag. And then it drools down the side of the can. And then noodles petrify to the floor behind it. It's truly evil. And you don't even want to know what the inside of the can looks like. Beneath the bag there lurks a festering . . . oh nevermind. It's too horrible. Today was my tipping point - don't ask me why. I had planned on doing other things.

But sometime after lunch something snapped. I popped to the hardware store and purchased a 30 gallon can. Definitely more our speed. That way maybe Knox can scale back to taking the trash out maybe only once a day. I don't know at what point it crossed my mind that it would be cuter if it was blue. I mean really. Obviously the thing can't fit under the sink - it's basically going to be the focal point of the room since it's so epically rhinormous. So why not blue? I already had the paint and a can of metal primer . . . which clearly seemed like guidance.

And then . . . well I should explain the fabric bit.
You know how the bag slips down inside the can? And then the spaghetti scrapers manage to fire the remnants of sauce straight down inside that gap? And then it turns black and nasty on the inside of the can? Here is my solution. (Shout out to my sister who I think was actually the originator of this idea . . . we were on the phone chatting about garbage woes while I was in the hardware store purchasing the can, and somewhere in the conversation this idea emerged.) A tight elastic band which cinches down over the bag, theoretically holding it clamped and impervious to the crazed spaghetti scrapers. The elastic is the key feature - the fabric is just for fun. (Sort of like a scrunchy. But never tell anyone I said that. Scrunchies make my "Top 10 Regrets from Junior High" list, along with wearing two pairs of colored socks and Keds with no laces. And this isn't actually "scrunchy" - it's nice and streamlined and flat.)

Before you all roll your eyes about getting the spaghetti all over the fabric, allow me to reassure you that this is the laminate version! Wahoo! Completely wipe-off-able.

(Update! Full instructions can be found here.)

I LOVE TRASH CAN SCRUNCHIES. I didn't even know I did until just now. We just have the stupid big rubber band around there. It's not cute. That's cute.

Here's my real question - how in the world do you crank this stuff out so fast? I have to fight against my silly project urges cause I know it will take me way too long to actually finish it. You need to give us a class in speed crafting.

I was checking out LittleHouseintheHills.blogspot.com reading list and I popped over to check you out. ;)

Love this trash can idea. It's simply spiff. Though it's going to have to be filed deep in my mental inspiration folder, since I don't really have need of one at the moment.

Love it! Super good idea!

So clever! And go ahead an call it a scrunchy say I. Nearly all of those junior high regrets are currently haute couture anyway. In fact, you should probably be working on some Amoretti scrunchies now. Seriously. You know they're bound to make a comeback someday soon, so you might as well ride the crest of that regrettable wave.

Heather Bailey can have her Trash Ties®, and you your Rubbish Scrunchies®. ;)

How did you make the fabric "scrunchie"? :)

Nice. We've used an antique 30 gallon barrel for more than a decade now. It fits the aesthetic bill for us, but not the bag-sliding-into-the-can thing. I'm going to have to think about that some.

Found this via Pinterest! and as a mom of five I feel your pain, but evidently don't share your genius as I'm still using the two mini versions that fit under the sink! This project must happen this week! Thanks for the idea--and the flat "scrunchie" is awesome.

Love your creativity; you are amazing!

Wow, that is the most fabulous garbage can I've ever seen! (I never thought I'd say that all together in a sentence) If we had a kitchen big enough for one, we'd be all over it! We use a medium size garbage can under the sink. boring.

LOVE this. I am totally doing this. It's cute, and why disguise the fact that it is indeed a trash can? It's hard to hide a trash can that's not teeny tiny, and like you said that's just impractical. So it ought to be cute AND practical, and this fits the bill perfectly. Thank you!

We have this trash can in our kitchen! Yep. It is the best just to go ahead and have a big one. I hadn't thought of paining it though and the fabric thing is very fun. I found this on pinterest. Kelly

Love the idea. I think it's so cute that I'm going to do this and use it to store blankets and pillows in my playroom (minus the trash bag). Thanks for the inspiration!

This post is PRECISELY what I needed today! I'm totally in the same realm of thinking as you. Intentions to start AND finish laundry, dishes and all those other "mommy/wifey duties" while my 2 year old is away but find myself lost in a new project that is always THE project I know will fix all of my woes in life. lol! I believe it is called "ADHD" in my case but nevertheless, props to you on this fabulous idea! I appreciate you!

Not silly at all! I've been coping with that problem for ages and never thought of that before. You'll be glad to know that one of our users just pinned it up to her pinspire board. Don't hesitate to get in touch for the link (masterpinspire@gmail.com)

I pinned this a while back on pinterest, bought the metal trash can and sewed a liner and made it into a laundry hamper for my boys' room!! Just now did i realize that the fabric was a scrunchie! I thought it was trash can repurposed into a laundry hamper!! Looks awesome in their room, thanks for the idea!
